Croatia vs Ghana
After two rounds of stellar action Group L has taken shape, and it looks like three nations will make a safe passage through to the Round of 32, with the next match, World Cup 2026: Croatia vs Ghana featuring two of them.
England currently top the group on four points, ahead of the Black Stars on goal difference while Croatia are a point behind in third, with Panama rock bottom and pointless. Ghana are surely through to the next stage and Croatia can join them if they avoid defeat at the Philadelphia Stadium, and Zlatco Dalic’s men start the game as clear favourites. After losing a thrilling opener to England the Croats recovered to beat Panama, while Carlos Querioz guided Ghana to a win over Los Canaleros before frustrating the Three lions in a goalless draw.
The vastly experienced Ghana manager performed a tactical masterclass against England; but the Croatia vs Ghana 2026 betting odds say Dalic will win this battle of the dugouts.
Talking Points
Calm Croatia can steer the course
A 4-2 defeat to England was a setback to Dalic and his team after they had pegged back Thomas Tuchel’s side twice, only to be scuppered by two second half goals. But they recovered admirably to beat Panama 1-0, a result which defender Josko Gvardiol was pleased to see, particularly earning a clean sheet after shipping four goals in their opener. The second half was better than the first for Croatia and they got their reward when Osasuna striker Ante Budimir scored early on.

Dalic’s team controlled the game but only registered six shots and two on target as they concentrated on getting the job done, and a delighted Budimir said: “So there we have started in this tournament and hope we draw the right lessons and continue to build on this victory. I am happy that I secured my first goal at the World Cup, it is important for us to start winning and get back to the team we were before.”
With three points in the bag and against a nation which already has one foot in the Round of 32, Croatia should be able to continue their progress in a calm and measured way. They won’t try to blow the Black Stars away and may need to be patient. And of course the team has bags of experience, with Luka Modric notching up his 200th international appearance in the win over Panama.
Black Stars know how to grind out a result
Ghana’s opening two games have gone pretty much to plan after they beat Panama, in what I thought was a third place decider, and then they took a point off title hopefuls England with a 0-0 draw. Against the Three Lions Ghana had only two shots in the entire name while England had 19, but they could have executed the perfect smash and grab had the officials not done Tuchel’s team a huge favour. Substitute Prince Adu was through and seemingly fouled by Ezri Konsa but the referee and VAR saw it differently.
Querioz was furious, saying: “It’s another penalty they need to give to Ghana, a clear penalty against England.”
Things had gone well for the Black Stars in their opener as Caleb Yirenkyi scored a 95th minute winner against Panama, a match which Los Canaleros dominated with 62 per cent possession and 11 shots to seven. So the pattern of play is likely to be the same when Ghana face Croatia.
Thomas Partey in midfield will do his best to protect the Black Stars’ defence which has Wolfsburg’s 22 year old centre back Jonas Adjei and Istanbul Basaksehir star Jeremy Opoku at its heart.
At the other end of the pitch Manchester City striker Antoine Semenyo will always be a goal threat and his clubmate Gvardiol will keep a close eye on him.
History
Since becoming an independent country Croatia have been at the World Cup finals seven times, reaching the final in 2018 and the semi-finals four years later.
Ghana are at their fifth finals and reached the quarter final back in 2010 in one of the most controversial matches in World Cup history. Drawing 1-1 with Uruguay the Black Stars were denied a winner by a Luis Suarez handball and then beaten on penalties.
Recent form has been patchy for both nations; Croatia have won three and lost three of the last six games while Ghana have won one, drawn two and lost three.
Betting Tip
With the evidence of two games already we can be pretty sure the Croatia vs Ghana 2026 highlights will be a case of attack versus defence, and the Black Stars can be devilishly difficult to break down.
Ghana are priced here at SBOTOP at 5.50 to win or 3.25 to Draw, but I’m backing Croatia to win, and 1-0, priced at 5.50, might well be the outcome.
