Gunnar Nordahl
AC Milan are far off from their past glory and it’s no secret that they are still looking for their next star.
But while they’re at it, perhaps they would be keen on finding someone in a similar mold of Gunnar Nordahl who’s had a successful stint for the Rossoneri.
In his seven years there, the Swedish forward was as unstoppable as it gets. He would score a ridiculous total of 221 goals in that span, making him the club’s all-time leading scorer.
Nordahl would help lead Milan to championship glory in the 50’s. He put his team on his back when they won five capocannonieres as their leading attacker and he’s done it at an ultra-efficient rate of 0.77 goals per game ratio.
Up to this day, Nordahl’s record of 35 goals in a single season is still up in the record books. After a fruitful stint with AC Milan, the Swedish played two more seasons with AS Roma to round out his 10 years in Italy.
Jose Altafini
Prolific and dangerous are two words to perfectly describe Jose Altafini especially when he was at the peak of his powers.
In his 18-year career playing in Italy’s top-flight, the “Mazzola” notched 216 goals in 459 appearances playing for clubs like AC Milan, Napoli, and Juventus.
He would also experience success in the international level representing his home country. Playing for Brazil and Italy, Altafini once held the record for most goals in a single European Cup for more than 50 years. He also was part of the Brazilian side that took home the 1958 FIFA World Cup.
Alessandro Del Piero
Alessandro Del Piero is one of the main reasons why Juventus are known as the powerhouse who owns the highest Serie 2020 odds of winning the title.
Del Piero played for the Bianconeri for 19 seasons, 11 of them as their skipper. But what really stands out for Del Piero is his unwavering commitment to the club. When Juventus were forcibly relegated to Serie B in 2006 due to calciopoli, Del Piero never backed down and he took it upon himself to get the club back up to its feet.
Francesco Totti
He is what we call Mr. AS Roma as his 25 years with the club has been nothing short of spectacular.
Francesco Totti holds multiple records and a couple of championships under his belt. The 43-year-old led Roma to a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia titles, and two Supercoppa Italia titles. He is the second-highest scorer in league history with 250 goals while being the sixth-highest scoring Italian in all competitions with 316 goals.
Totti was also a star playing for his nation. He was part of the Italian side that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup and helped them go to as far as the UEFA Euro 2000 Finals.
With his scoring ability and veteran smarts, Totti is considered as one of the best players in the modern era.
Silvio Piola
Silvio Piola was a man ahead of his time. And with his goalscoring exploits back then, he is considered by many as the pioneer of Italian football.
Piola enjoyed a 25-year career in Italy’s top-flight. He played for teams such as Pro Vercelli, Lazio, Torino, Juventus, and Novara.
He is the only player in history to be the all-time Serie A top scorer in three clubs. All in all, Piola scored 274 goals in the league.
While he was capocannoniere twice, it’s shocking to learn that Piola never won a title. He came close, however, in winning it when he finished as a runner-up both for Lazio and Juventus.
It didn’t help when the World War 2 interrupted his professional career. However, with his body of work and longevity, there’s no doubt that he is one of the best players ever in Italy.
