Antonio Conte’s Napoli continued their Serie A title charge on Saturday with a statement 3-2 win away to Atalanta, a victory which took I Partenopei six points clear at the top of the table.
The gap could be reduced to three if Inter Milan can beat Empoli in the late kick-off on Sunday. On Wednesday I Nerazzurri drew 2-2 at home to Bologna, and that opened the door to Napoli who kicked it wider open in Bergamo. Elsewhere on Saturday there was a big win for Juventus over AC Milan, a result which lifted the Old Lady into the top four and left I Rossoneri trailing outside the European places. On the back of their draw against Inter, Bologna picked up another good result, a 3-1 win over Monza to move up to sixth while Roma also moved into the top half with a win by the same score line over Genoa in the Friday night opener.
The SBOTOP clash of the weekend saw league leaders Napoli take on Atalanta and La Dea came into the game on the back of a 15 match unbeaten run, but with three draws on the bounce. But Napoli’s big players all stepped up to end that run and stake their claim to another Scudetto, so soon after their 2023 triumph. Following the transfer of Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain, Conte called on his players to respond and they certainly delivered to put a huge dent in Atalanta’s own title hopes. The latest Serie A 2025 betting odds make it Inter, Napoli and Atalanta at one, two and three but Napoli’s odds are dropping after this latest win.
And this was a sweet revenge for I Partenopei as they were thumped 3-0 when they faced Atalanta back in November, and they had to work hard for the win as La Dea’s hot strikers, Ademola Lookman and Capocannoniere leader Mateo Retegui both hit the target for the hosts. Retegui scored late the last time the two teams met and he smashed home another with just ten minutes on the clock on Saturday. But Napoli drew level when Matteo Politano found himself in space and he fired his effort into the top corner; and the visitors went ahead with a beautiful move just before half time. David Neres released Andre Anguissa with a clever back heel and he pulled the ball back for Scott McTominay to find the roof of the net. The former Manchester United man is loving life in Naples and has become a key figure in Conte’s title plans.
La Dea fought back in the second half and Lookman levelled the scores on 55 minutes to set up a grandstand finish, and it was Romelu Lukaku, reunited with Conte at Napoli, won all three points with a superb header on 78, leaving La Dea trailing the leaders by seven points.
The Old Lady sees off Milan
Juventus and AC Milan are playing catch-up and when they met in Turin on Saturday both desperately needed a win to stay in touch, and it was the Bianconeri who came up trumps with two goals in a frantic five minutes in the second half. Juve boss Thiago Motta made a smart move at half time, replacing midfielder Khephren Thuram with Timothy Weah and, after striker Samuel Mbangula curled in a beauty on 59 minutes, Weah went on a driving run before sliding his shot low into the corner of the net.
Milan could have drawn level with Juventus with a victory but the defeat meant they dropped six behind and four places lower in eighth.
In other Serie A 2025 news Bologna are starting to look more than capable of matching their fifth placed finish from last season as they dispatched Monza 3-1 to go sixth. After drawing with Roma and Inter the Rossoblu got back to winning ways, recovering from an early setback to dispatch Monza comfortably. Daniel Maldini sprung the offside trap to score with just four minutes on the clock and then Bologna sprung into action. Riccardo Orsolini created the equaliser with a pinpoint cross for Santiago Castro to glance a header home and then the hosts went on all out attack. It was 2-1 just before the break when Jens Odegaard smashed a half volley into the net and Monza were facing a second half avalanche. Orsolini almost assisted a second but Thijs Dllinga headed his cross wide; but the third came when the excellent Orsolini finished the job himself when he turned sharply and fired home from a tight angle. Inter Milan and Lazio are playing on Sunday evening and there may be some more movement at the top end of the table but, for now, Napoli are sitting pretty.
