Europa League: Braga and Freiburg Fight for a Trip to Istanbul

Braga vs SC Freiburg

Braga are set to host SC Freiburg for the first leg of their Europa League semi-finals tie on Thursday evening, and the winner of this tie will face the winner between Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa in the final at Besiktas Park in Istanbul at the end of May.

These two sides don’t have much history in Europe’s top club tournaments, so they plan to make their latest runs count. Braga and SC Freiburg, representing Portugal and Germany, respectively, made it this far by eliminating their La Liga counterparts, Real Betis and Celta Vigo, in the quarter-finals. The Europa League represents their biggest chance of winning silverware this term, as Braga and SC Freiburg are unlikely to win their respective domestic leagues.

With so much at stake, Braga and SC Freiburg are planning to give it their all in this two-legged contest, and SBOTOP has you covered with today’s preview.

Talking Points

Injury worries for Braga

Braga’s Europa League run has been built on defence, but injuries are mounting ahead of the semi-final against Freiburg
Braga manager Carlos Vicens during the Europa League quarter-final against Real Betis

Defence has been the name of the game so far for Braga in this year’s Europa League, as Carlos Vicens’ men have secured seven clean sheets, a competition-high. During their journey, they’ve managed to keep Ferencvaros, Go Ahead Eagles, Nottingham Forest, Nice, Red Star Belgrade, Celtic, and Feyenoord scoreless. They’ve also won three of their five European home games without conceding this term (D1, L1).

However, they couldn’t carry it over in the domestic front, as Braga are adrift of the Primeira Liga’s Top 3. Braga are coming off a 2-1 loss to Santa Clara, so they’re now 16 points behind Sporting in third with only three league matches left.

Braga’s rearguard will face a big challenge, as Sikou Niakate (Achilles) and Adrian Leon Barisic (adductor) are in the medical room. Diego Rodrigues (ankle) is also sidelined, while Florian Grillitsch is the newest addition to the injury list after the German midfielder sustained a knock against Santa Clara.

While Braga have been solid defensively, make no mistake, they can also score with the best of them. Rodrigo Zalazar is their top marksman with 23 goals across all competitions this season, and the 26-year-old will link up with Pau Victor and Ricardo Horta, who has four Europa League goals under his belt.

SC Freiburg’s form has dipped

SC Freiburg haven’t won a game since their 2-1 win against Heidenheim in the Bundesliga last week. Julian Schuster’s group botched their first shot at a trophy by losing to VfB Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals. After that, they lost 4-0 to Borussia Dortmund in their latest Bundesliga contest.

The Black Forest head into Thursday’s opening leg having won only two of their last nine Europa League away matches (D3, L4), failing to score in three of their last four, and losing two of their last three without reply earlier this year. SC Freiburg will rely on Vincenzo Grifo to change that, as he’s their top scorer with 13 goals in all competitions this term.

History

Thursday marks the first-ever European encounter between Braga and SC Freiburg. The Portuguese side has won five of their last 13 major European matches against German sides (D3, L5), but all five of those wins were in the group stage. Meanwhile, they’re winless and goalless in four games in the knockouts (D1, L3).

Braga are only into their second-ever major European semi-final. Their last semi-finals trip was in the 2010-11 Europa League, where they knocked out Benfica before losing to Porto in the final.

SC Freiburg are in the semi-finals of a European tournament for the very first time, and their only previous European encounter with a Portuguese team was in the 2013-14 Europa League group stage, a goalless draw against Estoril.

Betting Tip

The Europa League 2026 odds predict a tight contest between Braga and SC Freiburg. Because they’re playing at home, Braga have the slight edge at 2.42, while SC Freiburg aren’t far behind at 2.71, and a draw is at 2.93 in the 1X2 market.

First legs tend to be cagey, so the Europa League 2026 highlights could be limited on Wednesday. Besides our recommended bet, bettors may also want to add Under 2.25 at 1.93, Under 2.50 at 1.69, and even Total Goal 0-1 at 2.68 to the parlay.

Braga’s defensive solidity could be the difference, so one could be tempted to go with the Correct Score of 1-0 in their favour at 6.80, while the same result for SC Freiburg is slightly higher at 7.80. Meanwhile, a goalless draw could yield a tidy payday of 8.40 your bet.
