Atalanta vs Juventus
Hot on the heels of a trip to Saudi, to play in the Supercoppa Italiana, Italy’s finest have been back in domestic action this weekend and the entertainment is coming thick and fast, and Atalanta vs Juventus at the Gewiss Stadium is the pick of the bunch this week.
Serie A is hotting up in 2025 and both La Dea and the Old Lady aim to be main players in a quickly unfolding story but, on their return from the Middle East, they both failed to win their opener, Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta drawing 0-0 away to Udinese, while Thiago Motta’s Juventus earned a point in a 1-1 draw in the Turin Derby.
Those results left Atalanta in second, two points behind the leaders, Napoli, and Juventus in fifth, three points behind Lazio in fourth; and a draw in Bergamo would not be ideal for either.
Talking Points
Atalanta waiting for Retegui
La Dea’s trip to Udinese offered a chance to regain top spot in Serie A, depending on results elsewhere, but their normally free-scoring front men drew a blank, and Napoli held on to top spot. Atalanta looked a little jet-lagged for much of the game and they had keeper Marco Carnesecchi to thank for the point as well as some luck as Udinese hit the woodwork. Le Dea could have nicked all three points late on but Lazar Samardzic’s low shot was saved in the bottom corner and Gasperini’s team settled for a draw, which was about as much as they deserved.
Top scorer Mateo Retegui has been out of action for three weeks and our Atalanta vs Juventus betting tips could well shift if the Capocanoniere leader is fit for the clash with I Bianconeri. He went off injured early on during Atalanta’s 3-2 win over Empoli and the club’s medical team reported Retegui had a muscle injury in his left leg, which would keep him out for 15 to 20 days. That means the Argentine striker missed the away league draws to Lazio and Udinese, as well as the Supercoppa Italiana defeat to Inter Milan but, while the club is currently being tight lipped, the initial timescale suggests he could be ready to take some part in the crucial upcoming fixtures against Juventus and Napoli.
And, to add to Gasperini’s dilemma, last week the Serie A 2025 news from the Italian press reported that Premier League title chasers Arsenal are serious in their pursuit of a new striker with Retegui in their sights. So the form of Ademola Lookman, who has nine goals, and attacking midfielder Charles De Ketelaere, who bagged a brace in the win over Empoli, will be key to La Dea’s success this week and, if Retegui makes an appearance then so much the better.
Juventus need to be ruthless
A point in a 1-1 draw away to Torino was not a disaster for the Old Lady but neither was it a triumph and they conceded a lead for the fourth match in succession. 19 year old Turkish winger is in a rich vein of form and he scored an early opener against Il Toro but Nikola Vlasic earned the hosts a draw. Yildiz put Juventus ahead in the Supercoppa Italiana only for AC Milan to run out 2-1 winners. 23 year old midfielder Khephren Thuram scored a brace against Fiorentina but La Viola hit back twice to earn a 2-2 draw and, even in the 2-1 win over Monza Juve had to score again after conceding an equaliser.
The draw with Torino was particularly frustrating as I Bianconeri battered their city rivals, with nine shots on target but the ruthlessness was nowhere to be seen. Top scorer and Juve talisman Dusan Vlahovic missed the match with a niggle and he may be ready to return to the squad for this mega clash.
History
La Dea has fed on scraps in this relationship, winning just five of the last 58 meetings with Juventus who have won 36 and there have been 17 draws. The last encounter saw I Bianconeri win the Coppa Italia last May as Vlahovic scored the only goal of the game while both league games ended in a draw, 2-2 in Turin and goalless in Bergamo.
With three wins, two draws and one defeat Atalanta are in slightly better form than Juventus who have won two, draw three and lost one of the last six.
Betting Tip
I guess the SBOTOP tips for this match depend on the news from the physio rooms, and, as things stand, Retegui and Vlahovic are both in contention.
Atalanta are favourites to win this clash at 2.06 with Juventus at 3.18 but I’m backing these point hungry teams to share the spoils.
