Premier League: Chelsea Aim to Plunder Anfield

Liverpool vs Chelsea

Get ready for the match of the week folks; Frank Lampard takes his Chelsea side to Liverpool with a mission of extending their hosts winless run to three games.

Premier League: Liverpool vs Chelsea is a clash between two sides which will be chasing the title next season, though both will have their work cut-out to stop Manchester City, as the Sky Blues look set to embark on a summer spending spree. But this season belongs to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who stormed to the title with plenty to spare, and it’s little surprise that they seem to have run out of steam.

A win for the Blues would confirm their place in next season’s Champions League; they currently sit third in the Premier League table and with rivals Leicester City and Manchester United scheduled to meet on the final day it’s looking very good for Lampard’s side.

A draw would be a decent outcome for Chelsea and the SBOBET odds on a Blues win or draw at 1.69 tell us they have a good chance to cement third place on Wednesday.

Talking Points

The Reds’ work is done

Liverpool won the league weeks ago but their hopes of surpassing Manchester City’s record points total of 100, achieved in 2018, were scuppered in a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal last week. Uncharacteristic errors from Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker handed the Gunners a way back into the game after Sadio Mane had put them on course for a win.

Van Dijk and Alisson have transformed Liverpool from a swashbuckling also-ran to runaway leaders so we can forgive them an off day.

Klopp’s champions needed three wins from their last five games to surpass City’s record, but their first home draw of the season against Burnley began to apply the breaks to the Red Juggernaut.

Last season the Reds amassed 97 points, the third highest total in Premier League history, when they were pipped at the post by the Sky Blues. So to miss out on a golden opportunity to become the most dominant side in the competition’s history will be an irritant to a Liverpool side yet to celebrate their magnificent season with their legions of fans; particularly as they were thumped by City, 4-0, two weeks ago.

The Reds will be without Jordan Henderson, which is a common theme when they struggle, but they have an outstanding squad which can rip apart any team on its day. Chelsea will need to find a way to stop the threat from the wings, as Liverpool’s wing-backs Trent Alexander Arnold and Andrew Robertson have been prolific once again in terms of assists with 12 and ten.

Chelsea looking for consistency

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are showing real signs of intent, recruiting some big names to add to their exciting young squad, and a 3-1 FA Cup victory over Manchester United on Sunday illustrates just how well they measure up against the challengers. To qualify for the Champions League and win an FA Cup in his first season as a Premier League manager would be a superb achievement for the former Blues midfield star. And a cup final against Arsenal is on the agenda after Olivier Giroud and Mason Mount scored to see off the Red Devils.

Chelsea will arrive at Anfield full of confidence, but they have a habit of dropping in a dud of a performance, and that’s something they need to lose. They returned to action with back to back wins only to throw one in against West Ham, where they were lucky only to lose by the odd goal in five. They responded with two more wins and then a 3-0 reversal to an out of form Sheffield United.

So Lampard will be keen, after the latest victories against Norwich City and Manchester United, to break the sequence.

History

The head to head Liverpool vs Chelsea results have been fiercely contested in the Premier League era with the Blues winning 30 of the 75 clashes to Liverpool’s 26 and there have been 19 draws.

Liverpool won the return match at Stamford Bridge by 1-2, but Chelsea exacted their revenge with a 2-0 victory in the FA Cup just prior to the COVID 19 outbreak.

Anfield has been a fortress for the Reds; they are unbeaten at home in 25 games and have won all but one of their league matches on home soil this season.

Betting Tip

??
Liverpool vs Chelsea Chelsea Asian Handicap +0.50 @ 1.85
July 23, 3:15 (GMT+8)

So can Chelsea stop the Reds at Anfield on Wednesday? Well, the pre-match Liverpool vs Chelsea betting odds say they can.

Liverpool is odds against at 2.08, and the draw is at 3.35 with Chelsea slightly bigger at 3.45.

I’m backing the Blues to get a result and a score-line of 1-1 at odds of 6.80 is a decent long shot bet.
