Switzerland vs Algeria
Switzerland have been one of the top performers of the World Cup 2026, and they’re in for a fascinating clash against Algeria in the Round of 32. Their match will take place at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, on Friday morning.
Murat Yakin’s side topped Group B with seven points from a possible nine, finishing ahead of tournament co-hosts Canada. On the other hand, Vladimir Petkovic’s group finished third in Group J with four points, but with an inferior goal difference against second-seeded Austria.
After a surprise 1-1 draw against Qatar, Switzerland replied with a 4-1 rout of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a 2-1 win over Canada in the group-stage finale. Meanwhile, Algeria barely qualified, as they lost 3-0 to Argentina, won 2-1 against Jordan, and drew 3-3 against Austria.

Talking Points
Switzerland have an underrated attack
Switzerland come into this game in superb form, as Murat Yakin’s men are undefeated in their last nine of their last 10 competitive matches (W6, D3), with their only defeat a 3-2 loss to Euro 2024 champions Spain in the Nations League last November 2024. The Red Crosses have been solid in the final third. In Group B, they recorded seven goals and conceded three for a healthy goal difference of +4.
Johan Manzambi has significantly boosted his stock in this year’s competition. After notching five league goals and four assists to help SC Freiburg finish seventh in the Bundesliga standings and reach the Europa League final last term, the 20-year-old midfielder leads Switzerland in scoring with three goals.

Ruben Vargas has two goals, while Breel Embolo had two assists against Canada. The Red Crosses also have Dan Ndoye, Noah Okafor, and Michel Aesbischer, who add to their firepower in the final third, despite not really being big names.
Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler, Manuel Akanji, and Ricardo Rodriguez are the veteran leaders for Switzerland. Moreover, their only injury concern is Silvan Widmer, who did not train on Sunday due to a hip knock, making him questionable for Friday.
Algeria’s defence is in question
Head coach Vladimir Petkovic is probably aware that Algeria must tighten up their backline to stand a chance in the knockouts, as the Fennecs have already conceded seven goals so far in the competition.
Petkovic has a huge goalkeeper dilemma, as Luca Zidane and Oussama Benbot have yet to hit their stride. Zidane started the first two matches, while Benbot didn’t have a good outing in the group-stage finale against Austria, where they conceded in the final kick of the contest.
We suspect that Zidane will reclaim his spot between the sticks against Switzerland. But their back four of Aissa Mandi, Ramy Bensebaini, Rafik Belghali, and Rayan Ait-Nouri must do better. Meanwhile, Riyad Mahrez, Amine Gouiri, Fares Chaibi, Houssem Aouar, and Ibrahim Maza should take care of the attacking load.
History
Clashes between Switzerland and Algeria have been rare, as Friday marks only their third-ever competitive encounter. Before this, the Red Crosses have beaten the Fennecs twice – both in international friendlies – during the 1980s.
Switzerland’s first victory over Algeria came in November 1983, as they secured a 2-1 win courtesy of a late strike from Heinz Hermann. Three years later, Hermann was once again on the scoresheet, having registered a brace in their 2-0 success. Besides Hermann, Laurent Jaccard was also on the scoresheet for Switzerland, while Ali Bencheikh netted Algeria’s only goal in this fixture.
The last time Switzerland faced an African side was at the World Cup 2022, when they defeated Cameroon 1-0 in the group stage. Algeria’s most recent match against a European side was against Austria last time out.
Betting Tip
The World Cup 2026 odds have Switzerland advancing to the next round at the expense of Algeria, but the gap between these two sides is not as far off as expected. The Red Crosses are priced at 2.05 to win. The Fennecs are at 3.73, and a draw is at 3.27 in the 1X2 market. Both teams are capable of producing new World Cup 2026 highlights in Vancouver, with Switzerland likely to score more goals. Besides our recommended bet, punters may also want to add Over 2.00 at 1.62, Over 2.25 at 1.93, Over 2.50 at 2.25, Over 2.75 at 2.56, and Total Goal 2-3 at 1.97 to the parlay. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 2-0 in favour of Switzerland – the result of their last encounter – will yield a tidy payout of 8.60 your bet.
